Weihai, China: The Global Capital of Fishing Rod Manufacturing
Weihai, a coastal city of roughly 2.9 million in Shandong Province, has quietly become the world’s most important city for fishing rod manufacturing. Estimates suggest the city accounts for roughly 80% of China’s fishing rod production — and China itself produces an estimated 70–80% of the world’s fishing rods.
The Numbers Behind Weihai’s Dominance
Weihai’s fishing tackle industry is staggering in scale:
- 1,000+ registered fishing tackle enterprises in the greater Weihai area
- Over 80% of China’s fishing rod production concentrated in Weihai
- ¥30+ billion (approx. US$4+ billion) in annual fishing tackle output value
- 18.4% export growth in 2025–2026 despite global trade headwinds
- Key export markets: Europe, Japan, the United States, and increasingly Southeast Asia
The city’s tackle-making roots trace back decades, but the concentration of the industry has accelerated in the past 15 years as global brands shifted production from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan to mainland China.
The Industry Ecosystem
Weihai offers something that few other manufacturing cities can match: a complete vertical ecosystem. Within a 30-kilometer radius, a buyer can find:
Raw material suppliers — Carbon fiber prepreg manufacturers produce the material inputs for rod blanks, supported by global carbon fiber giants that have set up facilities in the region.
Mould and equipment makers — Companies like Weihai Tonglian Precision Machinery build the automated rod-wrapping machines, curing ovens, and finishing equipment used by hundreds of factories.
Component specialists — Guide rings, reel seats, cork/EVA handles, and other rod components are produced by dozens of dedicated suppliers, many located within the same industrial parks.
Rod manufacturers — From small family-run workshops with 20 workers producing 5,000 rods per year, to industrial-scale factories with 500+ workers producing 500,000+ rods annually.
Full-service OEM/ODM factories — Companies like Weihai Hanhigh and Global Fishing Tackle offer end-to-end services from design and prototyping to production, custom labelling, and drop-shipping.
The Automation Revolution
Weihai’s manufacturing capabilities are evolving rapidly. Shandong Handing Industrial Automation, based in Weihai, has developed the world’s first fully automatic fishing rod production line. With over 40 patents and a ¥20+ million (US$2.8+ million) investment, Handing’s automated lines can reduce manpower requirements by 80% while keeping defect rates below 0.3%.
This automation is transforming Weihai from a low-cost labour hub into an advanced manufacturing centre, allowing its factories to maintain cost competitiveness even as Chinese wages rise.
Carbon Fiber Innovation
Carbon fibre technology has been a key driver of Weihai’s growth. Several of the city’s manufacturers have in-house carbon composite R&D capabilities, allowing them to produce lighter, stronger rods than ever before. One notable example is Guangwei, a Weihai-based company whose carbon fibre technology yields rods that are 10% lighter and 15% stronger than standard alternatives.
Many Weihai factories now offer 40T, 46T, and even 60T high-modulus carbon rods — performance levels once exclusive to Japanese manufacturers.
A City of Exporters
The city’s export prowess is remarkable. Major brands — including Daiwa, Shimano, Abu Garcia, and dozens of European companies — source rods from Weihai OEM suppliers. At the same time, an emerging generation of Weihai-based brands is beginning to sell directly to international markets.
In 2025–2026, Weihai fishing tackle exports grew 18.4% year-on-year, driven by:
- Diversification away from the US market — Tariffs have pushed manufacturers to focus on European and Asian markets
- Quality upgrades — Weihai factories are producing higher-end rods that compete with Korean and Japanese production
- E-commerce channels — Cross-border e-commerce platforms like AliExpress and Amazon have opened direct-to-consumer sales for Weihai-based brands
The Exhibition Connection
Weihai also runs its own dedicated fishing tackle exhibition — the China (Weihai) International Fishing Tackle Exposition, commonly known as CGC Weihai. Held each autumn, the show typically attracts 600+ exhibitors and tens of thousands of visitors.
CGC Weihai serves as the annual meeting point for the city’s tackle industry, attracting international buyers who want to visit factories and see the production process firsthand — a complement to China Fish in Beijing, which focuses more on finished products and brand building.
Challenges
Weihai’s industry is not without challenges. Rising labour costs, trade tensions with Western markets, and increasing competition from Southeast Asian manufacturing hubs (particularly Vietnam) are real pressures. However, the city’s investment in automation, its deep supplier ecosystem, and its growing reputation for quality suggest it will remain the global capital of rod manufacturing for the foreseeable future.
Outlook
As the global fishing tackle market grows from US$17.6 billion (2025) toward a projected US$27.4 billion by 2034, Weihai is well-positioned to capture a disproportionate share of the growth. Its combination of scale, vertical integration, automation investment, and export experience is unmatched anywhere in the world.
