KastKing Appoints Spanish Distributor Calico in Southern Europe Push — What It Means for China's Tackle Export Strategy

KastKing, the fast-growing tackle brand owned by Chinese manufacturing powerhouse Eposeidon, has taken another calculated step in its European expansion by appointing Barcelona-based Calico as its exclusive distributor for Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra.

The deal, formalised following discussions at EFTTEX 2026 in Barcelona, is not the typical distributor agreement. It reflects a relationship that spans almost two decades between KastKing’s leadership and the Calico team, built during previous roles at TUF Line and other industry positions.

For a brand that manufactures the vast majority of its products in China, the Spanish partnership carries significant strategic weight. KastKing has been one of the most visible Chinese-origin tackle brands to successfully build an international consumer-facing identity, competing directly with established Japanese and American brands on product innovation and pricing.

A Calculated, Not Hasty, Approach

KastKing’s Business Strategist Rex Nelson was candid about the pace of the brand’s European rollout.

“Our European plans are certainly moving more slowly than expected, but much of that is due to the calculated approach we are taking to selecting the right partners,” Nelson told Angling International.

The company has set a target of having a complete European distribution network by the end of 2027. For Chinese manufacturers watching KastKing’s trajectory, the message is clear: building a genuine brand presence in Europe requires patience, relationship capital and a willingness to invest in long-term partnerships rather than transactional distribution.

Why Calico?

Calico’s strengths align well with KastKing’s product portfolio. The Barcelona-based distributor has a strong sales force covering the Iberian Peninsula and surrounding islands, with deep penetration in saltwater fishing markets — a natural fit for KastKing’s top-tier saltwater spinning reels.

But the partnership is designed to be bidirectional. While Calico brings established retail relationships in southern Europe, KastKing’s freshwater portfolio — reels, rods, line and accessories — offers Calico a pathway to expand beyond its traditional saltwater stronghold into freshwater markets.

“We will provide feedback from retailers, guides and anglers across our markets, helping KastKing better understand European fishing techniques and consumer preferences,” said Montserrat Calico. “This collaboration may contribute to future product developments and adaptations specifically suited to European anglers.”

The Chinese Manufacturing Angle

KastKing’s rise is inseparable from China’s fishing tackle manufacturing ecosystem. Eposeidon, the parent company, operates from Shenzhen and has built KastKing into one of the most recognised direct-to-consumer tackle brands globally, leveraging China’s supply chain advantages in precision manufacturing of reels, rods and accessories.

The brand’s success demonstrates a model that other Chinese OEM manufacturers are watching closely: build a Western-facing brand identity while retaining China-based design and production. KastKing’s ability to win product awards at EFTTEX and ICAST while maintaining competitive pricing is a direct result of this vertically integrated approach.

Launch Timetable

KastKing’s official launch into Calico’s markets is scheduled for the end of September 2026. The brand is currently finalising product assortment and preparing a comprehensive market introduction strategy that includes dealer presentations, digital marketing campaigns, product testing, media collaborations and direct engagement with the fishing community.

KastKing has confirmed it will return to EFTTEX in Prague in 2027 and will also exhibit at ANGELWELT Berlin alongside its German distributor, Advanced Fishing.

For China’s fishing tackle industry, KastKing’s European progress offers a real-world case study in how a Chinese manufacturing brand can build genuine international presence — not through price alone, but through strategic partnerships, consistent product development and long-term market commitment.
