Weihai: The World's Reel Capital
Weihai is a coastal prefecture-level city at the eastern tip of the Shandong Peninsula, with a population of approximately 2.8 million. It is not a household name in the international fishing tackle community — but it should be.
Weihai and its surrounding counties produce approximately 35% of the world’s baitcasting reels, plus a meaningful share of spinning reels, PE braided line, and watercraft. No other single location globally comes close.
What Weihai Makes

Why Weihai
Three factors converged to make Weihai what it is today.
1. Nearby carbon fiber supply. Shandong Province has a substantial carbon fiber manufacturing base, originally serving industrial and aerospace applications. Reel and rod factories clustered here to be close to raw materials and process expertise.
2. Port access. Weihai has a deep-water port with direct shipping to Busan, Osaka, and the US West Coast. For export-oriented factories this is critical: container shipping from Weihai to North America takes approximately 18–22 days, comparable to Shenzhen.
3. Multi-generational experience. Weihai’s fishing tackle manufacturing dates back to the late 1980s. Today, many of the cluster’s medium-sized factories are run by second-generation owners and engineers. This is not a collection of assembly shops — it is a concentration of experts.
Anchor Enterprise: Guangwei
Weihai Guangwei Outdoor Equipment Co., Ltd. (fac-gw-weihai, Shenzhen Stock Exchange: 002699) is the largest publicly listed entity in the cluster. Guangwei’s public filings disclose annual revenue, capacity, and export ratios in more detail than the typical Chinese fishing tackle company.
For buyers, two things are worth noting about Guangwei:
- It supplies multiple international brands on an OEM basis
- It also operates its own consumer brand (GW), providing visibility into retail pricing
Medium-Sized Factories: The Suppliers Most Buyers Actually Deal With
Guangwei is the face. But the bulk of export volume comes from several dozen medium-sized factories with 100–500 workers. These are the suppliers buyers actually encounter at trade shows and on Alibaba.
Typical profile:
- Founded between 2000 and 2015
- Specializes in one or two reel categories
- 80–90% export-oriented
- Per-SKU MOQ of 200–500 units
Factory names worth noting (incomplete, not endorsements):
- Weihai Supreme (private)
- Weihai Haiwei (private)
- Several OEM factories supplying US/European brands on a white-label basis
Sourcing in Weihai — Practical Notes
If you are considering sourcing reels from Weihai:
- Visit in person. The cluster is within a 30 km radius. Touring a batch of factories over two days is entirely feasible.
- Trade show timing matters. Weihai’s local annual fishing tackle show is typically in March–April, when international buyers are concentrated. Time your visit around this window.
- English proficiency varies. Large factories have export teams with fluent English. Medium-sized factories rely heavily on WeChat translation.
- Tooling and customization. Medium-sized factories can generally accommodate logo printing, color matching, and spec adjustments. Major mechanical modifications typically require a 6–12 month development cycle.

Editorial Checklist
Before citing “Weihai’s share of global baitcasting reel production,” verify the following signals:
- Top 3 OEMs: Weihai’s reel capacity is concentrated in three private factories plus several second-line producers. Track their business registration changes quarterly — consolidation moves in the cluster typically precede price shifts.
- Export destination structure: Weihai reels have a higher proportion of exports to North America and Japan. A noticeable shift in export destinations (more to Russia, Mexico, Southeast Asia) is almost always tariff-driven transshipment, not a brand strategy adjustment.
- Component sourcing: Most reels still use Japanese braking systems and Taiwanese gears. Treat “fully in-house components” claims as marketing language unless you see the BOM.
- MOQ drift: Weihai factories publicly state 300–500 units OEM MOQ, but actual production scheduling during peak season is closer to 800 units. If you negotiate below 800, you are almost certainly being routed to a subcontractor rather than the main line.
