High-Carbon Fishing Hook Wire Drawing, Quenching Tempering, Micro-Barb Forging, and PTFE Coatings

The Sharp End of the Tackle Industry: Hook Metallurgy

A hook must satisfy two diametrically opposing mechanical requirements: extreme tensile strength to prevent bend-out under heavy fish pressure, and sufficient elasticity to resist brittle fracture upon sudden shock loading.

In China’s hook manufacturing capitals in Zhejiang and Jiangxi, automated multi-station cold-heading machines craft tournament-grade hooks using specialized steel wire.

1. Raw Carbon Steel Wire & Cold-Forging Dynamics

2. Chemical Point Sharpening & Quenching Cycles

  1. Electrolytic Acid Bath Sharpening: Chemically micro-etches the ground tip into a razor-sharp conical needle point, piercing tough cartilage on minimal hook-set force.
  2. Controlled Atmosphere Salt-Bath Quenching: Heats hooks uniformly to 850°C followed by oil quenching and secondary 350°C tempering to reach 50–54 HRC target hardness.

3. Ultra-Slick PTFE (Teflon) Coatings
