Weihai opens cross-border e-commerce workstation for fishing tackle industry belt
Weihai has established a cross-border e-commerce workstation dedicated to its fishing tackle and outdoor products industry belt, part of a push to help small and medium manufacturers bypass intermediaries and reach overseas consumers directly.
The workstation is one of three provincial-level cross-border e-commerce industry belt stations Weihai set up — alongside caravans/trailers and textiles and apparel. For the tackle industry, the city is applying a “collective trademark plus individual trademark” matrix: manufacturers keep their own brands while also using “Weihai Fishing Tackle,” the industry’s first registered collective trademark, as a regional public brand.
Weihai officials say the model is designed to solve long-standing weaknesses of the local tackle industry — fragmented small enterprises, weak brand power and thin margins. The region produces roughly one in every three fishing rods sold globally, yet most factories have historically lacked the capability to connect with end buyers abroad, leaving market feedback slow and product development reactive.
Under the collective brand, companies can build differentiated positioning, win overseas consumer trust and capture brand premium, according to the Weihai municipal commerce bureau. Workstation activities include platform matchmaking, cross-border operations training and one-on-one coaching for factories.
The e-commerce push builds on Weihai’s 2018 designation as a national cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone and follows a broader trend in which Shandong tackle makers are shifting from pure OEM export to direct-to-consumer and branded cross-border sales on platforms such as Amazon and TikTok Shop.
For overseas buyers, the initiative signals growing availability of factory-direct and brand-level sourcing from Weihai’s tackle cluster, with the collective trademark acting as a quality-and-origin marker across the region’s smaller producers.
