Handing No.1 Gen-7 rod tops 12,000 units on launch day

Handing, the Weihai-based tackle brand that built its business through e-commerce, sold more than 12,000 units of its new Handing No.1 Gen-7 fishing rod on the first day of release on May 27, 2026. Qi Song, a company representative at Shandong Handing Industrial Automation Co., Ltd., said the launch confirmed the brand’s position in China’s online rod market, where Handing has ranked among the top sellers in the rod category on Tmall since 2017.

For many Chinese anglers, Handing rods are their first fishing rod, a status the company has cultivated through aggressive digital marketing and a product lineup priced for entry-level and mid-range buyers. The Gen-7 launch builds on that foundation with refinements aimed at modern freshwater anglers, combining updated blank technology with the consistency that comes from automated production.

Handing’s journey from pure online retailer to manufacturer is one of the most closely watched transitions in China’s tackle industry. The company first built its sales engine on e-commerce, then moved into self-built production lines, and most recently developed its own automation equipment. In its intelligent workshop, the industry’s first fully automated rod production line handles more than 30 processes with minimal human intervention, from material loading and smart transport to precision tape wrapping and spraying. A robotic arm completes a tape wrapping cycle in seven seconds, and high-precision cloth application holds tolerances within 0.2 millimeters.

The automated approach has delivered measurable gains. Handing reports that the line reduces manpower needs by 80 percent, lifts production efficiency by about 50 percent and cuts costs by roughly 30 percent, adding around 12 million yuan (approximately USD 1.7 million) in output value per year. A second automated line is now in trial operation, and the company says the new line carries an even higher level of automation and faster production speed, signaling that Handing intends to keep pushing the frontier of smart rod manufacturing.

Handing is part of a broader upgrade in Huancui District, where 11 above-scale fishing tackle enterprises have been recognized as provincial-level specialized and innovative SMEs. Together with brands such as Baofeilong, Handing accounts for a combined domestic market share of more than 20 percent in China’s rod market. The district’s manufacturers are moving away from the low-margin OEM model of the past, competing instead on technology, brand and standards as Weihai consolidates its role as the world’s rod-making capital.
