Nexus Outdoors Acquires Blackfin Rods — US 'American-Made' Push Tests China's Rod Manufacturing Dominance
Nexus Outdoors Acquires Blackfin Rods
Nexus Outdoors has expanded its portfolio of fishing and outdoor brands with the acquisition of Blackfin Rods, the Florida-based rod manufacturer known for its American-made saltwater and freshwater rods.
The deal brings the Hobe Sound, Florida company into a stable that already includes ScentLok Technologies, Blocker Outdoors, Whitewater Fishing, Hardcore Waterfowl and TUO Gear. Nexus said the acquisition would accelerate Blackfin’s growth while preserving the domestic manufacturing, craftsmanship and angler-focused approach that have defined the brand since its inception.
‘American-Made’ as a Strategic Differentiator
The most significant signal in the deal — for Chinese rod manufacturers and their customers alike — is Nexus’s stated intention to expand Blackfin’s American-made offering at a time when much of the global fishing rod industry has shifted production overseas.
Nexus believes Blackfin’s US-based manufacturing capability provides a significant point of differentiation in the marketplace, and plans to invest further in the Hobe Sound facility. The new owner is also targeting increased investment in product innovation, building on Blackfin’s engineering heritage with new rod development programmes for both saltwater and freshwater anglers.
Blackfin’s current portfolio — including the Offshore Elite and Carbon Elite saltwater ranges and the Bass Elite freshwater series — will remain in production, with Jim Schiefelbein appointed Brand President under the new ownership.
“We’re positioned to invest in our people, our products and our Hobe Sound facility in ways that will strengthen everything anglers already love about Blackfin, while opening doors to new opportunities for growth,” Schiefelbein said. “This is just the beginning for Blackfin.”
Nexus CEO Patrick Hylant added: “Blackfin’s commitment to domestic manufacturing and its deep connection with the saltwater fishing community made this an easy fit for our portfolio.”
What It Means for China’s Rod Industry
China remains the undisputed centre of global rod manufacturing, with the Weihai cluster alone accounting for more than half of the world’s fishing rod output and over 1,000 factories serving OEM and ODM customers. The overwhelming majority of rods sold under international brands — including many marketed in the US — are manufactured in China.
The Blackfin acquisition is the latest sign that a segment of the US market is willing to pay a premium for domestically produced tackle. Similar positioning has been adopted by other US rod builders, who emphasise hand-crafting, local materials and supply-chain transparency as selling points against mass-produced imports.
For Chinese rod OEMs, the trend is a double-edged signal:
- On one hand, it reinforces that “made in China” is increasingly associated with volume production and value pricing, while premium positioning migrates toward local manufacturing or high-end domestic Chinese brands.
- On the other, the US market’s size and its appetite for innovation keep Chinese factories central to the supply chain. The same tariff environment that makes domestic US production more competitive also pushes major brands to diversify sourcing — but China’s scale, cost structure and full vertical integration in blanks, guides and assembly remain difficult to replicate at volume.
Outlook
The acquisition comes at a time when US angler participation has softened slightly from record levels and trade policy uncertainty continues to shape sourcing decisions. Nexus’s investment in Blackfin’s facility suggests that “American-made” rod manufacturing is no longer a niche heritage story but a deliberate growth strategy.
For Chinese manufacturers, the lesson is consistent with what trade analysts have argued for several years: the volume market stays in China, while brands increasingly compete on provenance, engineering and service. The factories that win will be those that pair China’s manufacturing muscle with brand-level innovation and quality consistency.
