Qingdao Leichi crafts pirate jewellery from surplus tackle parts
Qingdao Leichi Industrial & Trade Co., Ltd. has begun turning surplus and loose-moving fishing tackle components into a line of pirate-themed jewellery, marketing Jolly Roger’s necklace pendants assembled entirely from small parts sourced through its existing tackle production. The Shandong-based manufacturer, better known to international buyers as a fly reel and fly rod supplier, is pitching the accessory range as an inexpensive add-on line for tackle shops and souvenir retailers across Europe and North America.
The necklaces combine lightweight hardware elements — including miniature swivels, beads and small machined fittings — into wearable replicas of the classic skull-and-crossbones motif. According to the company, every component on the pendant is a genuine fishing tool, a detail the firm is leveraging to differentiate the product from generic costume jewellery and to position it as a conversation piece for anglers and maritime-themed retailers alike.
The move reflects a broader strategy among mid-sized Chinese tackle manufacturers to diversify revenue streams without investing in heavy new tooling. By reworking parts that would otherwise sit in inventory or be sold as bulk seconds, Qingdao Leichi is converting what had been a cost centre into a margin-generating consumer product. The unit cost of each pendant remains low, the company says, because the raw components are drawn from existing fly rod and reel production rather than purpose-built jewellery supply chains.
For distributors, the appeal lies in cross-merchandising. Tackle retailers attending the major European trade shows in recent seasons have shown growing interest in non-fishing gift items that carry an authentic angling heritage, particularly items that can be sold at the counter without requiring an angling licence or specialist knowledge. A pendant priced for the souvenir and gift market opens a new category for shops that have traditionally relied on seasonal lure and line sales.
Qingdao Leichi is offering the pirate pendant range alongside its core catalogue of fly rods, reels and combo outfits, and is reportedly willing to supply small minimum-order quantities to test the concept with independent retailers before committing to larger production runs. The company is also exploring custom colour schemes and branded packaging for distributors seeking exclusive gift-shop lines tied to charter fleets, fishing lodges and coastal tourist destinations.
The jewellery line sits within a wider trend of Chinese tackle suppliers branching into lifestyle and branded merchandise as competition intensifies in the core rod and reel segment. With dozens of fly rod factories clustered along the Shandong coastline alone, manufacturers are increasingly looking to proprietary accessories and value-added products as a way to build margin and reduce dependence on commodity tackle pricing. Qingdao Leichi’s pirate pendant, however unusual, illustrates how even the smallest component can be repositioned as a standalone export product when margins on traditional gear come under pressure.
International buyers interested in sampling the range or requesting pricing can reach the company through its Alibaba storefront or via direct contact at its Qingdao headquarters, where export staff are handling enquiries for the autumn 2026 shipping window.
